Website Bells and Whistles

27. January 2005 | Category Genealogy, Interests, My Websites, Updates

Been fiddling around with the website again. Couple updates various parts. Updated Genealogy portion of site, with some more current information and information from the few emails I’ve received about incorrect information. Also tweaked the layout of main page to include genealogy photos on Flickr and information on PHPGedview viewing of my genealogy data. I suppose I should update the gedcom behind that one too! Along with that, changed linkage to Extra Genealogy stuff I had. I don’t know, but maybe I’d like to post somethings to a Blogger hosted Blogspot address, but Flickr kinda does that for me, but doesn’t have all the convergence with blogs that Google seems to enjoy with Blogger and Picasa’s Hello. Hm… I’ll just maintain the status quo I suppose.

The other change of mild interest may be the use of Movabletype to convert/make a website based solely on that software as a cms. It’s interesting that it actually works fairly decent. I’m not sure I’m gonna convert whole site to that though. It’s fairly labor intensive to get everythign to look/act just right and then if it all turned out, who would really be interested in the changes I’d make to the site?

I think it’s neat that you could see the whole site changes in a feedreader like say Bloglines, but then again would anyone other than myself really notice? I think I’d be willing to do it a new totally new website though, as it is kinda cool and whatnot.

So yeah. This site ain’t as stale as it used to be, which is good.

Pop goes the Weasel

26. June 2004 | Category Interests

Seems as though the convience of YahooPOPS and HotmailPopper has already reached Gmail. A Mr. John Barker is in development of his ‘Pop goes the Gmail‘ (PGtGM) program and it is already quite a neat little program!

I can’t wait for the improvements and have even donated to his development costs for the awesome little program! Keep up the great work!

P.S. Anyone needing a Gmail account can just ask

Gmail for Gmen

27. April 2004 | Category Interests

So I’ve been invited into a secret inner gathering where everyone knows my name. Well not really, I’ve been keeping my membership under wraps, due to an accute paranoia over spammers.

But that may all change with the release of Gmail by Google. I’m almost giddy with the prospects of Google giving the email market a good shakeup as now Yahoo! and Hotmail have shrunk down their services to a few megs, when Gmail’s is 1 Gig. As things stand it’s only in Beta, so better things are to come.

The worries over privacy? All they do is show ads about things relative to your ‘conversations’. I’d rather see ads about things I’m interested in, than an ad for AOL’s awesome dial-up service.

And to think that google is such a popular word. I remember reading some odd fact/word book once and finding the word googel fascinating. Too bad I didn’t have the where with all to trademark the unique word back then; I could have been richer than the founder of IKEA(no not Bill Gates). Sadly I wasn’t even remotely interested in the internet or on the ball back then.

Symantec Sucks

6. April 2004 | Category Interests

I have had the distinct displeasure of trying to fixing the problem your horrid software has inflicted on a friend’s computer. I don’t know even where to start. After kicking them off the internet and blocking up most internet related activities. I first tried uninstalling the beast, but had to resort to manual uninstallation due to corruption of software install. After this was accomplished, the internet was in worse shape. Email through outlook would lock up the computer and throw out a blue screen. After wasting the better part of a weekend, I finally gave up. But that doesn’t solve the problem, they need a working computer, at least the way it worked before they purchased your shoddy product. To add insult to injury, my cousin has also recently purchased and installed your product and is having similiar problems with his computer as well. And this is after having the BESTBUY store look into it to the tune of 200 dollars.

Support for your products costs an additional amount more than the product itself? How do you consider this a service? It’s a joke!

What is your company gonna do to make this right? Why do you even sell such a product? I would like a detailed response to this.
