Happy Anniversary to Me

27. May 2004 | Category Rest of Site, Updates

Depending on where you go, it appears michaelpiotter.com has celebrated one year of existance in cyberspace as of May 23, 2004! For JOY! And to think of all the joy this little corner of the web has brought to all who have visited….. it makes one teary-eyed :'( …….

It’s been an awesome year website-wise. Learned to install MT, after some unsuccessful attempts, Jumped hosting ships to a free host for 3 years, which lead to the fullfillment of the family genealogy being placed online. Fascinating retrospect really….. just wonder how long and awesome this site will be in a few more years.

I’m still bitter I didn’t nab piotter.com, piotter.org or piotter.net while they still existed without webmasters. It turks me off more that piotter.com isn’t even hosted, just domain registered. OH WELL….

Anyway, we’ve come a long way!

New Toy

24. May 2004 | Category Personal

So, I’ve finally taken the plunge.

Over the weekend I scored a long desired DVD burner, the True 8x by Memorex. I’d figured on waiting until prices were somewhere in the neigborhood of $80 and at least a 8x speed burner. Well, I got the speed, but paid a premium for the drive. (Or at least in my view) For some reason, I bought the media before the drive; eeriely similar to buying my first CD (Tim McGraw’s – Not a Moment Too Soon).

I’m not sure if the system can bear the load required to successfully burn an actual working DVD. I’m worried about the prices of mistakes as well, with blanks running at $1+, it’s an awfully expensive coaster! Wish they’d kill off a few formats too, all the new DVD lingo makes one head spin. Do you get the plus or minus burner (go for all-in-one), which media (-r,+r,-rw,+rw), what size (5gb,9gb, or bigger) and which laser (trusty ol’ red or the new blu-ray)????

Just give me my Betamax and leave me alone!

Ode to the City Slicker

15. May 2004 | Category Observations

Dear city dweller:

It’s so very unfortunate that your view of the world is so very small, and so very, very ignorant.

-There are places in this world that you can’t get to by tar roads.
-A population of 2000 people in one community is not a village or a hamlet, it is a town, not a big town, but a town none the less.
-A farm is not a zoo if it contains cows, sheep and chickens. A zoo contains zebras, lions, and other foreign critters.
-Just because a town lacks a stop light, does not mean it’s residents are inbreds or rednecks. That’s what West Virginia is for.
-Going shopping may involve travel time than getting in your car and driving a few blocks.
-Green grass may actually grow in ‘downtown’
-Having a cookie cutter house that is exactly the same as your neighbor on every side, except for color, is pathetic.
-A tractor, heaven forbid, may actually cause a traffic jam.
-Minnesota is bigger than the Twin Cities Metro.
-And no, it isn’t just a lake home ‘up north’

Many people live their whole lives without once feeling unfortunate for having to deal with headaches that come with living a city life.
