Genealogy Update

29. October 2004 | Category Genealogy

I’ve been toying around with some new features to incorporate into the genealogy section at Piotter.org. I’m updating the links feature in the Extra Genealogy section of this website as well to reflective those additions.

At Flickr, a really interesting photosharing tool, I will be storing genealogy related photos that go along with genealogical data on this website. I may integrate this into the actual Piotter.org pages at some point in time… we shall see.

The other important new tool is PHPGedView, viewable on this site at Piotter.info. It makes the gedcom appear a little more lively and has some interesting features such as a calendar to ‘remember’ important birthdays and the such.

These things should liven up the genealogy section of the site a bit. Enjoy!

This tree does fork!

I’ve been amazed by the response that my small, but livid fascination with genealogy has garnered me. The last name ain’t Smith or Jones, so it’s bound to be a tad easier than for those folks. Still, I’ve met like minded relatives that have Googled their name and have stumbled upon my website.

The responses from Germany have been interesting, but difficult to comprehend, since the mother tongue ain’t Deutsch no longer. But I’ve recently been in contact with someone who claims that I may have ‘Royalty blood’. Call me silly, but I don’t think that ancestors such as that would have been related to the same farmers in the family that immigrated here the end of the 19th century.

There has been some debate weather or not some relation had shoed Jesse James’ Gang horses, which I guess is when many families liked to link their ancestors with sensational news or history of the day. Interesting. Also the claim that the father of modern gymnastics, Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, was also a member of the clan.

I guess only good, solid research and actual facts will justify what is fiction and what isn’t.

The elimination of my people

2. March 2004 | Category Genealogy

Having done some research into the family tree, it was bound to wind back to the old country. I was horrified to learn that citizens living in Pomerania, once a proud part of Prussia, but now assimilated into Poland were forced out of their homes and homeland after cessation of hostilities in WWII. As history stands today, Germany declared war on Poland and pretty much the rest of the world at the time, not Prussia which it soon assimilated into it’s vision of a greater German empire. Did Slavs kick out all the natives out of Austria, just because they were part of the German cause?

I guess history is written by the winners, but what has Poland ever won? They’ve been eliminated as a country on three seperate occasions and still seems to exist for some reason. I guess Russia and Germany needed a mutual punching bag other than each other; what better than to throw Poland in between these two powers.

It just sucks that members of my family were used as such political pawns. Maybe that’s why I’ve always found dumb polock jokes funny.
